Rotation Evaluation, Determining Top Dead Center (PMS), Acceleration and deceleration management, as well as engine start-up, are operations performed by this component

São Paulo, June 2024 – Rotation sensors, installed near the crankshaft, are essential components for improving drivability in modern cars. They can be classified into two types: Inductive sensors, that do not require external power, and Hall sensors, that require a power supply. The NKT, brand of Niterra, Japanese multinational that also owns the NGK brand and specializes in components for ignition systems, emphasizes the four uses of rotation sensors:

1- Motor speed measurement: provide accurate data on angular velocity (rotation), allowing the injection system to adjust the air-fuel mixture optimally, for each rotation the engine is at.

2- PMS position display (Upper motor point) of the first cylinder: determining the exact position of the PMS of the first cylinder is necessary for synchronization of the ignition system with the fuel injection system, ensuring optimised engine performance, as well as the correct levels of consumption and emission of pollutants.

3- Acceleration and deceleration strategies (Engine Brake): The information provided by the rotation sensor allows the engine control system to implement efficient acceleration and deceleration strategies, contributing to a smooth and economical ride.

4- Engine Starting: The part is also vital to the engine starting process, since it provides data for the injection module to start running the engine efficiently.

Benefits for vehicle safety

Information from the speed sensors is crucial for the injection module, facilitating the starting of the engine and ensuring its efficient and safe operation. Without them, the engine may not run or the Injection light may illuminate on the dashboard. Proper maintenance of these sensors must always be up to date to avoid failures and ensure the correct management of the injection system.

"Although these sensors do not suffer wear and tear due to the use of the engine, Feeding problems, especially in Hall type sensors, can interfere with its functioning", afirma Hiromori Mori, Niterra Technical Assistance Consultant. "Other factors, such as clearances in the crankshaft, Warping and accumulation of residues in the sensor, can also hinder your performance. Therefore, The mechanic must evaluate the signal generated by the sensor using specific equipment, like an oscilloscope."

In case of need to replace the part, NTK rotation sensors are widely used in light vehicles and utility vehicles with diesel engines. Detailed information about your applications can be found in the e-catalog or in the NGK and NTK app.
