Multinational points out that components made with noble materials allow to reduce the extinguishing effect of energy, increasing efficiency in burning the air-fuel mixture

São Paulo, June 2022 – One of the recent developments in internal combustion engines is the increasingly frequent application of high-performance candles. According to NGK, Japanese multinational ignition systems specialist, the so-called special candles increase the efficiency in burning the air-fuel mixture by being produced from noble and resistant metals, such as platinum and iridium.

Hiromori Mori, NGK do Brasil Technical Assistance consultant, explains that the use of these materials makes it possible to reduce the diameter and, consequently, the mass of the electrodes in the candles. "This generates a great benefit during the spark of the candle – that moment when the burning of the air-fuel mixture begins. The lower the mass, less calorific energy is withdrawn and the higher the burning efficiency", claims.

Questions from drivers

Widely used in modern cars, especially with turbocharged engines, technology demands care at the time of maintenance. "If the vehicle has already left the factory with special sails, the recommendation is that the driver maintains these components and makes the revision according to the manual of the vehicle, which indicates the appropriate product and the exchange interval", guides the specialist.

Otherwise, lack of maintenance in the ignition system – in addition to directly affecting fuel consumption and pollutant emission levels – can compromise other components, such as ignition coils and catalyst, that have much higher costs than the candle set, "which reinforces the importance of carrying out the preventive review", complements Mori.

Another common doubt among drivers involves the application of platinum or iridium candles in older vehicles, which is allowed according to NGK, which offers the aftermarket a number of special sails available between the G-Power line, with platinum central electrode, and the Iridium IX line, with central iridium electrode.

"Both G-Power and Iridium IX sails offer great benefits to engines, as faster matches, higher idling stability and better accelerations", highlights the expert. NGK makes application application available to app developers and drivers information on the website www.ngkntk.com.br.
