Ethanol is the first option for many drivers when fueling their vehicles, principally, due to the lower price. However, with the approach of winter, this choice can mean more inconvenience when starting the car, especially for maintenance free vehicles. To avoid the problem, it is necessary that the auxiliary cold start systems and ignition components are overhauled. In order for the starting aid system to work properly, the ignition system must be in order (Candles, Ignition cables and coils). "Weared spark plugs, for example, can also make the game difficult. That is why, it is important that drivers periodically check components", afirma Hiromori Mori, NGK Technical Assistance Consultant. The auxiliary starting systems, in some vehicles, more modern, have the function of heating the fuel when the engine temperature is below 14ºC (this temperature may vary depending on the system strategy), this occurs whenever the vehicle is fueled with ethanol. this system, in conjunction with the charging and starting system, needs great power to work, and forcing its use with worn out spark plugs can cause problems and failures.. The same occurs in cars that have a gas tank, also called "six pack". "On models with the auxiliary tank, It is important to review the reservoir (cleaning and checking of pipes) and the replacement of gasoline with the arrival of lower temperatures, to ensure the smooth running of the system. Gasoline also has an expiration date and may lose its properties over time", explains Hiromori Mori. To avoid departure problems on cold days, in addition to keeping the extra tank filled, NGK recommends inspecting the spark plugs as instructed in the vehicle manual, every 10,000 kilometers or annually. It is also very important to check the conditions of the ignition coils and cables - responsible for transforming and conducting the high voltage to the spark plugs - whenever the system undergoes overhaul.
