São Paulo, February 2023 - In Brazil, persists a culture of doing the car review only in the pre-holiday period. Nonetheless, to keep the vehicle in good condition and prevent any future problems, it is important to also schedule an inspection for after the trip. A simple survey carried out by a reliable mechanic can avoid disruption and ensure the safety of car users.

"The first step after a trip is to observe if there have been changes in the behavior of the vehicle, such as increased fuel consumption and abnormal noise scans on suspension and brakes"., points out Hiromori Mori, NGK do Brasil Technical Assistance consultant. The specialist recommends, then, inspect if there are no engine oil leaks, coolant, transmission fluid and differential oil, in addition to checking the shock absorbers and brake system. Lastly, it is worth providing a good car wash to remove waste from land or sea.

Precautions and attention on the road

Before taking the road the driver can raise a history with supplies, mileage, average fuel consumption and adverse events already known along the route. "Both this data and vehicle observation tend to help the reliable mechanic perform the car inspection, ensuring its safe use on the return of holidays", affirms Mori.

Trips to very hot places call for increased attention to the vehicle's cooling system. In addition to the high temperature, summer is characterized by heavy rains. At this time of year, starting difficulties and irregular idling already indicate a marked wear of the spark plug, it becomes more essential to review the lighting system, windshield wipers and tyre condition. "Special care with clay is also indispensable, which can adhere to the surfaces of the transmission radiator or heat exchanger, impairing its functioning", warns NGK specialist in Brazil.

Candles, cables and coils

Of fundamental importance for engine operation, ignition system components should be prioritised during post-holiday review. "When worn, candles, cables and coils can cause serious damage to the, as increased fuel consumption, difficulty in starting and resuming speed, performance loss and idling instability", alert Mori.

Thus, NGK's guidance is to start checking the system from the spark plug - the only part located inside the combustion chamber that is easy to remove. "A simple visual analysis of the part allows you to identify several problems in the state of the engine, such as the use of poor quality fuel and infiltration of oil or coolant into the combustion chamber", instructs Mori.
