NGK expert explains that accumulation of residue deserves attention and that spark plugs should be replaced regularly
São Paulo, August 2024- In workshops, Mechanics often find dirty or waterlogged spark plugs, which can happen for a variety of reasons. A NGK, Niterra brand specialized in components for ignition systems, offers guidance on three signs of residue and liquid accumulation in the component that may indicate vehicle engine problems.
1- Gasoline residue or soaking: identifiable by the change in color of the ceramic insulator, This problem arises from the presence of unburned fuel and occurs more frequently if the car is fueled with gasoline. The cause may be a lack of tightness in the injectors, which compromises engine operation and can cause failures, in addition to contaminating the engine lubricating oil, reducing its useful life.
2- Oil residue or soaking: occurs when lubricating oil leaks into the combustion chamber, generating oil build-up and potentially leading to serious engine failures. Usually, is caused by excessive wear on the valve guides, drying out of valve seals, ring wear, ovalization of cylinders, problems with the oil pan pressure system and even problems with the turbo system. Using lubricating oil outside of specifications can also lead to the problem.. In these cases, a more careful analysis of the engine is needed, consumption of lubricating oil can lead to serious damage.
3- Carbon accumulation: indicates that the air and fuel mixture is excessively rich. This can result in high fuel or lubricating oil consumption and signal failures in the fuel injection system.. An inadequate mixture compromises engine efficiency and reduces component life..
Signs of malfunction
In addition to problems identified by repairers, Drivers may notice signs in their vehicles such as increased starting time that puts stress on the starter motor and battery, increases maintenance costs and increases fuel consumption. Some of the injected fuel is not completely burned, lifting at irregular idle speed, acceleration failures and increased pollutant emissions.
“Spark plugs are parts that wear out over time and must be replaced at the interval specified by manufacturers in vehicle manuals.. A simple spark plug inspection by the mechanic, can avoid many engine problems and in more extreme cases, alert you to future maintenance that will be necessary, Hiromori Mori affirmed, Niterra Technical Assistance Consultant.
